Lila Poonawalla was the first female Mechanical Engineer to graduate in India in 1967 from the College Of Engineering, Pune Technological University.
She began her career at Ruston & Hornsby before moving to Alfa Laval India. Poonawalla rose the ranks and, in less than 20 years, became the company’s first female Chief Managing Director (CMD) and the first female CMD in India of a multinational company. Due to her efforts as CMD and improving Indo-Swedish economic relations, she received the Padma Shri Award, the 4th highest civilian award given by the Government of India, in 1989.
In 1995, Lila Poonawalla and her husband, Firoz Poonawalla, founded the Lila Poonawalla Foundation (LPF) as a non-profit Public Charitable Trust in India. LPF has now served over 14,000 girls and young women by providing scholarships, mentorship, and empowerment and support programs at the secondary and higher secondary, graduate, and post-graduate levels.
Currently, Lila Poonawalla is on the Board of Directors of leading companies, including Maharashtra Scooters Ltd., Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Co. Ltd., Volvo-Eicher Commercial Vehicles Ltd., etc.
